The Troll Hunter
What a brilliantly filmed and executed hoot! An intelligent mockumentary that manages to both mock and scare!
In a nutshell
A group of university film students follow a ‘poacher’ around until he lets them into his world of troll hunting!
Mood of the film
Laughter! Panic! Disbelief at how brilliant the film is.
Best performance
And the Oscar goes to Hans the troll hunter with only one facial expression, the deepest voice you’ve heard in a long time and Landrover shredded with claw marks!
Standout scene
There’s too many. The first sighting of a troll. The number of sheep chained to a bridge as bait. The spilling of Christian blood as ‘bait’. Dead bears being brought in from Poland and blamed for sheep and people being killed.
Okay, okay, I will single out one scene though. The team is caught in a troll lair. They’re covered in troll ‘gunk’ so the trolls, who are blind and stupid, cannot smell them. The trolls settle in for the night and fall asleep. They also proceed to fart! The team nearly dies a death by troll fart.
Negatives
None.
Is the film relevant today?
Even though it is hugely funny and seen mostly as a mockumentary, it still comments on governments lying and covering up their messes. It also pays tribute to Norwegian folklore and bedtime stories.
Does it copout?
No. Watch out for the last clip of the actual Norwegian Prime Minister supposedly slipping up.
