ROSA
It is just under 10minutes long, it was made by one guy, a guy with no budget whatsoever and no backers to keep happy. What bliss. It is called ROSA and it is utterly breathtaking.
In a nutshell
“ROSA is an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes ROSA, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. ROSA will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.”
Mood of the film
It is a stark apocalyptic world with moments of beauty and light.
Best one-liner
There’s no dialogue in the film, which makes it universally accessible.
Best performance
If animated characters can win ‘a best performance’ ROSA would be the ideal candidate.
Standout scene
Oooh, I have to explain this without giving away the plot. Watch out for the first droplets of blood to fall on the ground. No, it will not be gross.
Negatives
It is too short!
Is the film relevant today?
It is relevant on two levels. One, it deals with destroying the planet and ultimately mankind. A worthy subject I would say.
Two, it is taking on the film industry. It was made by one guy, Jesús Orellana, funded by him, advertised on the Internet months in advance and made available to watch for free on 11-11-11! Apart from the clever marketing strategy, Jesús had complete creative control and produced award winning film. Me thinks the big movie mogul companies should take note.

The short-film was created entirely by young comic-artist Jesús Orellana with no budget during a single year. Since it’s world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival, ROSA has been an official selection at film festivals around the world such as Screamfest, Toronto After Dark, Anima Mundi or Los Angeles Shorts Film Festival. In October ROSA was screened at the opening night of the Sitges International Film Festival, considered the world’s best festival specialized in genre films. Following the succesful festival run, the short film has attracted the attention of the major talent-agencies and Hollywood producers. Currently ROSA is in development to be a live-action motion picture.
