Margot Timmins – Margot’s Corner

May 1, 2010

For those living under rocks, Margot Timmins is the legendary voice behind the legendary Cowboy Junkies and I saw them live!

In 2005 the wife and I had flights booked via London to Italy. As it happens I was on the Cowboy Junkies site at the time and spotted a concert booked for Brighton! I promptly bought tickets and moved our flights forward by a few days.

That is how I ended up in a pub in Brighton, with half a pint of apple cider in hand, marveling at how Margot can silence a crowded room by effortlessly letting that legendary voice slip out and echo through the night. Yowzer.

Because the Junkies and Margot are not signed to a big label, getting your hands on their music could have proven to be difficult was it not for www.latentrecordings.com. It is their own site where they represent their own music but also the music of other, smaller artists that they obviously dig.

Some of the Cowboy Junkies content is exclusive to the site. That includes Margo’s Corner – Ty Tyrfu Sessions, Volume 1. Margot has the following to say about the album: “At times I get the urge to take the short journey West down the 401 to Guelph, Ontario, home to Jeff Bird and his large network of musical friends. There in Jeff’s home studio, Ty Tyrfu, we’ve recorded some of my favourite songs by some of my favourite writers. It’s an easy, stress free way to pass a lazy afternoon. Welcome to my corner. Come back every now and then to see if I’ve added something new.”

‘Dance me to the end of love’ originally done by Leonard Cohen will haunt you for days.
