Anxious people – what a delight
“A bank robber holds open house attendees hostage, then vanishes, leaving police baffled.”
I must state upfront that the title of this show is quite misleading. The characters might all have their demons to deal with, but they are not overly anxious or neurotic. The show will not cause you to be anxious. As a matter of fact, it will make you laugh out loud, grin quite a lot, and perhaps wipe away the odd tear. It is most definitively not hard work.
It is not shallow either. It has a beautiful, understated humanity to the characters. The characters are normal people – relatable, complicated and the best of all, kind. There are no baddies. What a nice change of pace for a Swedish ‘crime drama’.
The storytelling is straightforward. The opening act sets the scene. The following chapters provides every hostage’s backstory/motivation and seamlessly weaves in the story of the two policemen, which also happens to be father and son. The final act solves the mystery, and gives everyone, including the viewer, just enough closure without veering into schmaltzy, pretentious territory.
And the bonus? There is quite a cool puzzle to solve – who robbed the bank?!
