Anna Calvi – One Breath
One can easily recognise a Calvi track. That carefully controlled, yet sweeping voice undoubtedly does stand out and, yes, it sounds like the voice she set out to create behind the closed curtains of her parents’ house – it is a strange blend between Nina Simone, Piaf and Netrebko. Her astounding guitar skills are reminiscent of the kinda stuff created by the great Belgian muso Django Reinhardt. (Anna still has to contend with the surprise that a woman can play the guitar as well as she does. Eish. Read her Guardian interview here.)
Now she has released her second album, One Breath. I suspect we are faced with genius here and I am at a loss for words.
Even though it is still distinctively Calvi, it is an entirely overhauled Calvi. The guitar sounds totally different, the mood, while still grand, is somehow stripped down and more intimate, and she has added even more dimension to her voice.
I will stop now.
